Wonderfully expressive shot :o

They're all exceptional but this one stands out for me as there is a bit more character here, it seems to tell something about the animal.

Marvellous and your animal shots are always a treat on the eye

Thanks

Try to get closer or use a longer lens. If you take this shot much later in the day or early morning or an overcast day, the light from the slats would not be so harsh. The other option is to use fill in flash to bring out the owl details. Hope this helps. :)

thanks for your comments. however, i like the blown out strips of light, not sure why tho! :) yes, i have a much more sophiscated setup now, and i have learned how to take the best shot in these circumstances. thanks again

Strong back lighting is great as long as you keep the details sharp in the main subject. Fill in flash will allow you to do that and still get the "blown out strip" bg. :)

thank you, ill keep that in mind. i have newly bought a SB-600 for my D80, and im getting some interesting results from playing around. is there a way to specific fill flash or is it, as i believe, the default option when using the flash?

fill in flash would be by setting the strobe at partial strength. Look in the flash manual under fill in flash methods. You goal is to through just a bit of light on your subject to bring out sharp detail but not so much light that the flash is the primary light source and what controls the metering.

Excellent barn owl picture. I haven't seen one in real life in about 10 years. It scared me to death when it flew out just a few feet above my head.

I had a barn owl in my back garden one time, (which is really unusual as it was far from it's own habitat); it had a broken wing. The raptor specialist told us to carefully capture it then bring it in. I'd only ever seen stuffed barn owls at the museum - which are quite freaky. But this one was so beautiful it's feathers were so soft, I got to pet it's head once we got it to the raptor guy. :snowflake:
